1. (thalamus, torus) The expanded region at the end of a peduncle to which the floral parts are attached. It is usually convex but may become flattened or concave. Such modifications (see hypogyny , perigyny , epigyny ) alter the position of the gynoecium in relation to the other floral parts. 2. The point on a leaf or thallus where reproductive organs are borne. Examples are the swollen tips of the thallus of certain algae in the Fucales, which bear the conceptacles.
