An arrangement of floral parts in which the stamens, sepals, and petals are inserted above the ovary, giving an inferior ovary. Epigynous flowers are seen in many members of the Rosaceae, e.g. quinces (Chaenomeles). The receptacle is urn shaped and completely encloses the ovary, the other floral parts arising from the top of the receptacle. A type of pseudocarp, the * pome , commonly forms from such flowers. Compare hypogyny , perigyny.
