ovuliferous scale

A scale that bears ovules and then seeds in the female *strobilus or cone of the conifers. It is borne in the axils of the spirally arranged woody bracts that constitute the cone. The ovuliferous scale is a highly specialized *megasporophyll and is homologous with a carpel.
