(cone) 1. A well defined group of closely packed sporophylls bearing sporangia arranged areund a central axis, as found in the gymnosperms and in certain lower vascular plants (e.g. Lycopodiales, Selaginellales, and Equisetales). In conifers it constitutes the commonly recognized 'cone' and comprises spirally arranged ovules and lignified ovuliferous scales. 2. Any of various cone-like structures seen in angiosperms, e.g. the aggregate fruits of alders {Alnus) and hops (Humulus).
