The culture of excised ovules on suitable media in vitro. Ovules have been cultured with pollen grains of the same species in order to observe the processes of fertilization and embryo development. Culture with pollen of different species may enable certain crosses to be made that are normally impossible due to incompatibility factors in the stigma. Some ovules in culture give rise to callus tissue that subsequently forms numerous embryolike structures (embryoids). These can be separated and grown on to mature plants, so providing a means of plant propagation.
