The determination of an inherited characteristic by * polygenes, so that it shows approximately continuous variation from one extreme to another. The size of beans, ear-length in maize, and many other characteristics show multiple-factor inheritance, and do not, at first sight, behave like Mendelian characters. Compare single-factor inheritance. See quantitative variation.
