Several nonallelic genes all affecting the same character and approximately  additive  in  their effects.  Polygenic systems, also called polymeric systems, were first noted in red-kernelled maize. The intensity of the colour is governed by three unlinked genes and depends on the number of alleles for redness that are present. Compare pleiotropism.
