quantitative variation

(continuous variation) The type of variation shown by a characteristic that is exhibited to a greater or lesser extent by all members of a population or species. Often the characteristic has an average value, about which individuals in the population are distributed. An example would be the size of ears from a cereal crop. Continuous variation is common in characteristics that are strongly affected by environmental influences, and in characteristics determined by many genes, each with a small effect. Compare qualitative variation.
