hydrotropism

A *chemotropism in which water is the orientating factor. Thus most roots show positive hydrotropism, growing towards moister regions of the soil, while hypocotyls and the reproductive organs of certain fungi exhibit negative hydrotropism. If water is in short supply hydrotropism exerts a stronger influence on the direction of root growth than geotropism.
