hydroxyproline

A polar imino acid formed by the hydroxylation of proline. The enzyme that catalyses this reaction only acts on proline residues that have been incorporated into a polypeptide chain. Hydroxyproline is rare in most proteins but common in cell-wall proteins. Degradation of hydroxyproline does not follow that of proline; instead it is broken down to alanine and glycine.
