epigenesis

The theory that an organism develops from a fertilized egg by a gradual series of interdependent physiological and physical changes, brought about by the genes, that result in an increase in the complexity of its separate parts. It refutes the earlier preformation theory, which stated that either the male or female gamete contained a miniature version of the adult and that only an increase in size followed thereafter.
