aerial root

A *root that arises above soil level. The term is usually applied to the tangled masses of roots developed by epiphytes, which hang down in the moist air. The root epidermis develops a sheath of dead empty cells, the *velamen, that helps absorb water from the atmosphere. See also pneumatophore , climbing root , prop root , buttress root.
