aerobe

An organism capable of living only in the presence of air or free oxygen, the oxygen being needed for *aerobic respiration . All plants, except certain bacteria and fungi, are aerobes. In contrast to most animals they do not die instantly when deprived of oxygen but can continue to respire anaerobically for a time. Compare anaerobe .
