pneumatophore

(aerophore, breathing root, respiratory root) An erect root that protrudes some distance above soil level. Pneumatophores are formed in large numbers by certain plants, e.g. Sonneratia and some mangrove species, growing in areas with waterlogged badly aerated soils. The surface of the pneumatophore is perforated by numerous lenticels that promote gaseous exchange.
