zygospore

A thick-walled zygote that is formed by the fusion of *isogamous gametes. It is characteristic of organisms that reproduce by conjugation, e.g. fungi of the *Mucorales and algae of the *Zygnemaphyceae. The thickened walls enable it to survive adverse environmental conditions. Compare oospore.
