The production or fusion of morphologically identical * gametes. It is found only in the more primitive algae and fungi and constitutes the simplest form of sexual reproduction. Although the gametes appear identical it has been found that two gametes produced by the same parent usually will not fuse (see heterothallic). Thus physiological differences exist and these are recognized by ascribing such gametes with plus and minus signs depending on their compatibility relationships (see mating strain). Compare anisogamy , oogamy.
