(vegetative propagation) A form of asexual reproduction in which specialized multicellular organs formed by the parent become detached and generate new individuals. Such parts may include bulbs, corms, gemmae, rhizomes, stems, tubers, etc. The regenerative capacities of various plant organs have been exploited through a number of techniques used in agriculture and horticulture to multiply stocks. These methods include budding, layering, air-layering, cutting, and pegging, and may be enhanced by the careful control of microclimate or by growth regulators.
