transferase

Any *enzyme that catalyses reactions in which a functional group is transferred from a donor to an acceptor molecule. Six classes of transferase are distinguished, including enzymes that transfer phosphate groups (phosphotransferases or *kinases ) and enzymes that transfer acyl groups (e.g. phosphate acyltransferase, which catalyses the transfer of an acyl group from phosphate to coenzyme A).
