(phosphotransferase, phosphorylase) Any * transferase enzyme that catalyses the transfer of phosphate to or from ATP or a related molecule. For example, hexokinase catalyses the phosphorylation of glucose and some other hexose sugars and is an important enzyme in the interconversion of hexose sugars, as most isomerases require a phosphorylated sugar as a substrate. Hexokinase is also one of three kinases in the glycolytic pathway.
