tapetum

The food-rich layer of cells that surrounds the spore mother cells in vascular plants. In some plants it breaks down to form a fluid termed the periplasmodium, which is absorbed by the developing microspores. In others the tapetum remains intact until shortly before anther dehiscence and secretes substances into the locule.
