stearic acid

An eighteen-carbon saturated fatty acid having the formula CH3(CH2)16COOH. Stearic acid is formed by elongation of the smaller palmitic acid. It occurs in many lipids and is also an intermediate in the synthesis of *oleic , *linoleic , and *linolenic acids.
