linoleic acid

A diunsaturated eighteen-carbon fatty acid found in various vegetable oils, especially linseed oil. In plants it is formed from oleic acid. However animals cannot synthesize it and, as a precursor of arachidonic acid and the prostaglandins, it is essential in their diets.
