squash

A microscopical preparation in which the material is flattened before examination. It is commonly used in the study of chromosomes. Some tissues, e.g. anthers, may be squashed directly while others, e.g. root tips, must first be softened. This is commonly achieved by-adding a cellulase enzyme.
