spur

1. A short thin side shoot from a branch, especially one that bears fruit or, in conifers, the shoots that bear the leaves.
2. A tubular projection from a flower, usually from the base of a perianth segment. Well developed spurs are seen in columbine (Aquilegia vulgaris) and larkspur (Consolida ambigua).
