(SDP) A plant that appears to require short days (i.e. days with less than a certain maximum length of daylight) before it will flower. In actual fact it requires a daily cycle with a long period of darkness. Examples of short-day plants are the autumn-flowering (e.g. Chrysanthemum) and spring-flowering (e.g. Fragaria) species of temperate latitudes. Compare long-day plant , day-neutral plant.
