(seral community, seral stage) Any plant community in a succession leading to a * climax. The nature of a sere is influenced by that of the preceding sere and itself influences the development of the succeeding sere. The initial community (pioneer community) in a succession is known as a prisere. Subseres are the stages in the development of a secondary succession, while microseres are the stages in microhabitats, such as small puddles or animal droppings.
