semipermeable membrane

A membrane that acts as a barrier to certain substances but will allow others to pass through. In many cases a semipermeable membrane will allow the passage of solvents, almost invariably water in biological situations, but not certain solutes. Such a membrane usually lets through small molecules but not larger ones. In such cases the membrane is said to be selectively permeable. See also osmosis.
