The process by which solvent molecules migrate across a * semipermeable membrane from a region of low solute concentration to a region of higher concentration. In biological systems, the solvent is invariably water and the migration tends to equalize solute concentrations on the two sides of a cell membrane. Osmosis is of great importance in the maintenance of cell * turgor and also in vascular transport. See also osmotic pressure , water potential.
