rhizophore

Any of the leafless branches, seen in many species of Selaginella, that arise from the stem at points of forking. Usually two rhizophores form at each fork but only one continues to develop. The rhizophore grows towards the soil, often branching repeatedly before reaching the soil surface. On contact with the ground, roots are produced from the swollen tips of the rhizophore.
