reticulate thickening

A type of secondary wall patterning in *tracheary elements in which the secondary cell wall is laid down to form a network. Unlike annular thickening and *spiral thickening , reticulate thickening permits little further elongation and therefore occurs in tissues such as metaxylem, which have already completed most or all of their elongation. Compare pitted thickening , scalariform thickening.
