annular thickening

A type of secondary wall patterning in tracheary elements in which the secondary cell wall is laid down in rings. Annular thickening is common in tracheary elements that have not yet finished elongating, for example those in protoxylem. Compare pitted thickening , reticulate thickening , scalariform thickening , spiral thickening .
