resolving power

The capacity of a microscope to enable clear observation of the fine details of a specimen. This differs from the theoretical resolution, i.e. the capacity to distinguish between two individual points despite their close proximity, as the resolving power of a microscope depends on the perfection of the lens, the light source, etc. The theoretical resolution is limited by the wavelength of light and is greater with decreasing wavelength (see ultraviolet microscope).
