red-and-yellow forest soil

A type of zonal acid *soil (a *pedalfer ) formed in wet subtropical regions. Leaching results in the accumulation of salts in the Β horizon. The red colour is due to iron oxides in the A horizon though if the soil is sandy, it tends to be yellow. Such soils contain little humus and are soon exhausted of nutrients when cultivated. They can be easily eroded.
