qualitative variation

(discontinuous variation) The expression of a characteristic in perceptibly different ways by different individuals in a population. Examples include the tall and short forms of garden pea used by Gregor Mendel. Qualitative variation is most obvious in characteristics determined by only one or two genes whose expression is not greatly affected by environmental factors. Such variation may be due either to recurrent mutation or to the existence of a balanced *polymorphism. Compare quantitative variation.
