primary pit field

An area of greatly reduced thickness in the primary wall of a plant cell, often penetrated by plasmodesmata. Primary pit fields enable relatively easy transfer of materials between cells, thus having a similar function to *pits. Cells lacking secondary walls can possess only primary pit fields, whereas those possessing secondary walls may also possess pits, which are often, but not always, positioned directly over the primary pit fields.
