primary growth

Size increase due to cell division at the apical meristems and subsequent  cell  expansion.  The  tissues so produced are termed the primary plant body and comprise all the tissues of a young plant. The gymnosperms, most dicotyledons, and some monocotyledons exhibit increased thickening of stem and root later in life by a process of *secondary growth.
