polarity

The condition that results from the establishment of a definite orientation during the differentiation of a cell, tissue, or organ. Polarity is evident in the early growth of plants, as in the bipolar development of an embryo from the zygote. In later growth it is evidenced in the separate development of roots and shoots, as well as various phenomena at the cellular level.
