pentose

Any five-carbon sugar. Common pentoses are *ribose , *deoxyribose , *xylose , and *arabinose. Pentoses are synthesized from hexoses in the pentose phosphate pathway, from carbon dioxide in the Calvin cycle, or by decarboxylation of nucleoside diphosphate sugars. Polymers of pentoses are collectively termed *pentosans.
