ornithine

A nonprotein amino acid, formula NH₂(CH₂)₃CH(NH₂)COOH. It is an intermediate in the synthesis of arginine, and many alkaloids, e.g. the tropane alkaloids, are derived from ornithine. It also occurs in the cell walls of some bacteria.
