heritability

The proportion of the total variance of an observable characteristic that may be accounted for by genetic factors. Knowledge of the heritability of a trait is of particular value to agriculturalists. For example, if a variable characteristic like yield shows low heritability in a particular crop, this suggests that most of the variation is due to environmental factors and thus selection of high-yielding plants over a number of generations would not improve the yield.
