gullet

An invagination at the anterior end of the cell of euglenoid algae. It has an expanded basal region or reservoir, a narrow passage rising to the surface, the cytopharynx, and an opening to the exterior, the cytosome. In the reservoir, in a region where there is no pellicle, particles from the surrounding medium can be taken into the cytoplasm by *endocytosis.
