guard cells

The pair of specialized crescent-shaped epidermal cells immediately surrounding the stomatal pore and forming the *stoma. The opening and closing of the stoma is controlled by changes in turgidity of the guard cells, facilitated by the pronounced thickening of the cell walls adjacent to the stomatal pore. Compare subsidiary cell.
