glucose 6-phosphate

A phosphorylated derivative of glucose. It can be formed by the action of hexokinase on glucose or by isomerization from glucose 1-phosphate. Glucose 6-phosphate is an important activated form of glucose. In glycolysis and in the pentose phosphate pathway the first step is activation of glucose to glucose 6-phosphate. It is also an intermediate in sucrose formation.
