folic acid

A member of the Β group of *vitamins first isolated from spinach leaves. In its activated form tetrahydrofolic acid it acts as a coenzyme in reactions involving the transfer of hydroxymethyl, formyl, and methyl groups. Such transfers are important in the synthesis of the purines and the pyrimidine thymine.
