electron density

The contrast between parts of a specimen observed by transmission electron microscopy. Electron dense structures deflect most of the electron beam and appear dark whereas electron lucent features do not deflect many electrons and appear bright. Such differences are often accentuated by the use of electron stains that render parts of the specimen electron dense that would otherwise appear electron lucent.
