elater

Any of the numerous elongate helically thickened cells intermixed with the spores in the capsule of most liverwort sporophytes. As the mature capsule dries out, tension builds up in the thickening of the elater. This tension is released when the capsule dehisces, dispersing the spores over a distance. See also hapteron.
