double helix

A molecule composed of two similar polymeric chains coiled in the same direction about the same axis, as in DNA. Actin, a fibrous protein found in most eukaryotic cells also takes the form of a double helix. Double helices are, however, relatively rare configurations. Much more common is the single helix (α-helix) characteristic of globular protein.
