double flower

A flower having more than the usual number of petals usually due to the transformation by a mutation of stamens into petals. Extremely double flowers, in which the carpels have also become petals, are termed flore pleno. An example is Ranunculus aconitifolius 'flore pleno' (fair maids of France). The transformation of reproductive organs into petals is called petalody.
