dehydration

A stage in the preparation of permanent slides for microscopical examination, in which water is removed from the specimen. The material is dehydrated slowly by being placed in a series of successively more concentrated ethanol solutions culminating with absolute alcohol. Plant cells must be dehydrated far more gradually than animal cells as there is a tendency for the protoplasm to shrink from the cell wall. Dehydration is followed by *clearing.
