dehiscence

The splitting open along predetermined lines of certain plant organs, such as anthers, spore capsules, and fruits, to release their contents. Dehiscence is often caused by the gradual drying out of the enclosing walls. In addition, variations in the degree of wall thickening may create tensions that result in a violent opening of the structure. See also annulus.
